Festival des Masques puts Porto-Novo firmly on the world cultural map
An event that draws crowds
From August 2 to 4, 2024, Porto-Novo was transformed into a vibrant stage for the first edition of the Festival des Masques, an event that celebrated the rich traditions of sacred and secular masks from Benin and the sub-region. According to the Institut National de la Statistique et de la Démographie (INStaD), the event attracted almost 40,000 visitors from a wide variety of backgrounds, consolidating Porto-Novo's position as a leading tourist destination.
Celebrations and entertainment in the heart of the city
The festivities came to life on the emblematic squares of Migan, Abessan and Lokossa, which served as backdrops for a series of captivating animations. Traditional music groups rang out their rhythms on the Esplanade de l'Assemblée Nationale, offering crowds an immersive musical experience under the stars. Open-air concerts were one of the highlights of the festival, attracting large numbers of spectators.
A scientific symposium on spiritual traditions
The festival was also marked by an international scientific symposium, which provided a space for reflection on the influences of Vodun on post-slavery identities and societies. The symposium enriched the event by highlighting the profound impact of these spiritual and cultural traditions.
The Grand Procession of Masks: a dazzling spectacle
On August 4, the Grande Procession des Masques was the highlight of the festival. Along the lagoon boulevard, spectators marveled at a dazzling parade where sacred and profane masks, each more spectacular than the last, came to life in a choreographed dance. Each meticulously crafted mask told a unique story, revealing the splendor and diversity of Benin's artistic and cultural heritage.
A collective success
The success of the Festival des Masques is due to the collective commitment of artists, craftsmen, volunteers, economic operators and visitors. Their passion and dedication brought joy and authenticity to every moment of the event. For three days, Porto-Novo was the scene of a veritable open-air cultural extravaganza, showcasing the rich cultural expression of Benin.
