A deep common heritage that has endured through the centuries
In every community of the diaspora, a wealth of traditions and practices recalls the Motherland, Benin. From our spiritual beliefs to our arts, from our cuisine to our musical rhythms, from our dances to our communal practices, so much unites us. Benin is the source of this living culture. Every aspect of our daily life bears the mark of this shared heritage, and this bond, powerful and timeless, has endured through the generations.
A historic law
granting beninese nationality
On September 2, 2024, Benin took a decisive and historic step by enacting a law that grants Beninese nationality to Afro-descendants. This significant action reflects the country’s strong desire to reconnect with its diaspora. Under this law, anyone with a Sub-Saharan African ancestor who was deported from the African continent during the transatlantic slave trade and the triangular trade can now apply for Beninese nationality. This act represents an official recognition of the shared history and common heritage that binds us together.
